For America

Artist:
Jackson Browne
Date:
12/23/2008

I generally try to keep it under wraps, but occasionally my politics slip out. Also I generally won't use videos that I think are troubling in some way, however in this case I am beyond intrigued. I watched the entire video and just saw it as a collection of "important events in American history" until you get to the very last image. I won't spoil it for those who enjoy suspense, but let's just say I had to immediately read the comments to see if he was being facetious or not. Since it appears that he is being earnest, I must say how often it AMAZES me how people try to co-opt songs that are about the EXACT opposite of what they're co-opting them for. Think Reagan trying to use "Born in the USA." Like I think at a bare minimum you should listen to the lyrics of a song before you decide it supports your belief system.

Little Steven

Stevie Van Zandt is super cool -- here he is doing that song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMKqJu8VPSY

And of course...returning to the possible misappropriation department, here's Michelle Branch singing it...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgT-y02rO8A

I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt since she claims "Jackson Browne taught it to her."

Silvio

Little Steven really put this song on the map, no question about it. His version kicks over all others.
